Looking for more distance

*mmacook said: I currently hit my irons the following distances 4 iron, 180 yrds 5 iron, 170 yrds 6 iron, 160 yrds 7 iron, 150 yrds 8 iron, 135 yrds 9 iron, 125 yrds pw, 105 yrds I would like to add 10 yrds per club. Would a different shaft add yardage? Or should I just work out and lose weight.. :)

RC52 said: Uhhh.......I would be happy with those distances. I would be much more worried about accuracy, just my two cents.

Y*ungun5 said: yeah. those are very standard..if not above average distances for irons. swing harder. :p irons aren't for distance. they're for scoring. if you put your irons spot on...the distance you hit them is highly irrelevant.

*zra76 said: I used to have 105g Nippon shafts and they were definitely longer. Also, the weather getting warmer has made a lot bigger difference than I thought. I'm hitting at least 1/2 club longer. Actually bumped my 5i up to my 180carry club from between 4-5.

fl*ggerrushmd said: Yes accuracy is more important than distance but the added yards don't hurt either. The easiest way to add distance is to generate lag, and hit the little ball before the big ball. Shafts can have some effect, but most of the distance that you can gain comes from generating coil in the backswing and unleashing it in the downswing. I would work on flexibility and stretching more so than weights.

ttc*p said: i use s300, can hit about 15 yard longer than urs. If that helping

l*mpalong said: What irons are you hitting? What shaft is currently in those irons? I don't hit my irons as far as some other folks do. My old Pings have much weaker lofts than the more modern, "jack-up" irons. If you HAVE to have more distance, you may find just strengthening the lofts will make a difference. As other posters have stated, especially with your irons, it's all about getting the ball in the hole. Televised golf has not been the typical player's best friend in this matter. We heard, all weekend, how "old" Kenny Perry was hitting his 5-iron from 223. Or, Phil came up just a tad short, hitting his 9-iron from 180. So, we think our manhood is diminished when we can't match those numbers. With irons, it's repeatability... consistently. It's being able to constantly and consistently drop your 5-iron one the flag at 155. Doing so will see your scores much lower than hitting one 5-iron 195 and the next 5-iron 180. Most of the greens we weekend hackers play aren't 15 yards deep!!!! I've been beaten handily by some older gentlemen (yes, there are a few left out there older than I) who probably don't get 140 out of a 5-iron. And, I've disappointed a few young flat-bellies who can scream that same 5-iron 200. Don't worry about length. Work on consistency!!!!

D*Gris said: your distances are about the same as mine....I'm happy with mine...like stated above, accuracy is more important. 7 iron 150 8 iron 135-140 9 iron 120-125 pw around 100 depending where I play it in my stance and how I swing

w*rbirdlover said: What limp said... and those distances are very respectable. :) You can get into big trouble trying to get more distance (overswinging etc)....

n*tuthugame said: Providing I make good contact I hit my irons a little farther than average. My irons have stronger lofts than most though... 8 145-150 9 130-135 PW for 125 yds, but my Pw is 44*. I don't know if I carry my irons what I think I do, but I know from a par 3 what iron will get me close to center of green. When ever possible I hit right from the yardage plate on the tee boxes (not all have them).

Br*ndonM7 said: Fill in the numbers on the bottom, then paint one number higher. Or buy a set like mentioned above (44° PW) where the manufacturer already did that for you. I have one set with which I get ~185yds out of the 5i. Of course, that 5i is 22°, only 1° weaker than the 3i in my other two sets.

*dam Pettman said: If you want to hit your irons further then, when you'd normally hit a full 5iron hit a full 4iron, pretty much garunteed it'll go further, not much to do with a lower score though.

At the blues at Ives there's a 200yd and a 210 yd par 3. The 200 yarder I had the breeze with me and pin in front and I hit 5I pin high. Probably carried 190. My 5I is 26*. On the 210 there was no breeze or elevation change and I hit 4I to the center of the green. Probably carried 200. 4I is 23*. At Washington the last hole says 147 and I bounced off the back with 8I. 8I is 36*.
